It's just a short walk from the accommodation to Lake Whakamarino, also known as Tuai Lake, for trophy brown trout fly fishing. Each year anglers land trout over 4.45 kg. Very large specimens of up to 12.5 kg are on record and some can be viewed decorating the walls of the local district club.
Shoreline fly fishing in early morning and late evening can be productive. At these times local fisherman usually fish the race from the Tuai power station. At other times, fishing from an anchored boat is a great way to pass the time as the fish can be seen sunning near inaccessible parts of the shore.
Lake Waikaremoana, a few minutes drive up the road, provides fantastic boat and shoreline fishing for both rainbow and brown trout. The Waikaremoana Power Scheme exposes a unique shoreline for anglers to target trout cruising the shallow margins. Try using damsel and dragon fly nymphs or woolly bugger wet flies. Artificial lures are also permitted at Lake Waikaremoana and some of the other Te Urewera National Park lakes.
